Ina Garden is a household brand. This has a lot to do with her relationship with The Food Network. They helped her Barefoot Contessa brand reach many millions of people over twenty years. What some might find surprising is the fact that when she was first approached by The Food Network, she said she would "lose her number" as she didn't want to be associated with The Food Network. Twenty years later, she's a network staple. But it wasn't an easy feat.
Her humble beginnings
Before Ina Garten became a household name in the United States, her Barefoot Contessa specialty grocery store in The Hamptons, Long Island had already established a following that was almost like a cult. It served clients who were looking for the finest food and caters to those who want it. Ina was able to get some help from her husband about how to build her brand. However, she felt it was time for her to take the next step and pitch a cookbook.
You can imagine her shock when her book idea was approved. Everything took off after that first cookbook. Although she considered her initial success a fluke after her first book's success, The Food Network called. Ina was quick to inform the network that she would "lose her numbers."
She was able to persevere!
She was rewarded for her trepidation, literally, when they kept returning to Garten with more and better offers. It wasn't about her negotiating a higher salary. She didn't believe she could host a cooking show. The network was stunned by her response but didn't give up. They sent her various food to try and win her over.
Although we don't know if she sent her food, Ina Garten accepted and has been a key part of The Food Network for over twenty-plus years. It's difficult to imagine the network without Ina Garten and the amazing food she makes.
