Jailhouse tunnels typically lead to the outside, not other cells
According to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, an inmate in Atlanta's Rice Street Jail was stabbed on Wednesday, after another inmate tunneled into a wall and attacked him.
The Sheriff's Office has not released any additional information on Kavian Thomas. Derondney Russel was named as the victim.
According to a press release from the Sheriff: "Accordingly to the initial report, Kavian Thomas dug through a wall of a shower to gain access to the adjacent cells where Derondney Russell had been attacked."
Russell sustained superficial stab injuries to his upper body. He is currently being treated at the medical unit. After the attack, the two cell blocks were shook down. Several weapons, including shanks, made of parts of the crumbling building infrastructure, were found.
In the same press release, Curtis Clark, the interim Fulton County Jail Commander said that the deteriorating structure of the building "presents us with a constant challenge to remove things like this" from the access of inmates. This jail is clearly past its prime. This makes it more difficult for us to provide the safest environment for both staff and inmates.
Thomas is still facing charges in relation to the attack, and local police have not revealed a possible motive.
