James Cameron sets the record straight about rumors that he is making a film about OceanGate after the Titan submersible accident.
The Titanic Director posted a statement to his Instagram Story and Twitter on Saturday. In it, he denied recent reports that OceanGate was creating a movie about the company which offered Titan shipwreck expeditions aboard their Titan vessel up until the deadly submersible explosion last month, that killed five people.
Cameron wrote: "I usually don't comment on offensive media rumors, but now I must." Cameron wrote: "I am NOT involved in any discussions about an OceanGate movie, and I will never be."
It was reported , that the Oscar-winning director had allegedly approached by a streaming channel to direct a dramatic series about Titan submersible disaster.
After a five-day hunt for the Titan submersible that went missing on Father's Day, the Coast Guard confirmed what was suspected: Stockton Rush as the CEO of the company and the sub's pilot, along with passengers Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood (19 years old), adventurer Hamish Harding and billionaire Hamish, Titanic enthusiast Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and divers Titanic and Paul-
The Coast Guard confirmed the debris was consistent with "a catastrophic loss of the chamber." They "immediately informed" the families about this discovery.
After the news broke that five people were dead, Cameron gave an interview to ABC News in which he shared his thoughts about the tragedy, drawing a comparison with the Titanic sinking and the Titan Sub implosion.
Stockton Rush (co-CEO of OceanGate and Titan captain) was also criticized by the director for failing to address safety concerns.
Cameron said: "I am struck by the similarities of the Titanic tragedy itself, when the captain was warned repeatedly about ice in front of his ship and yet he proceeded to speed at full-speed into an icefield on a night without a moon and many people perished as a consequence."
He said, "For us it's very similar to a tragedy that happened in the past where warnings were ignored." It's amazing that it happened at the exact same site, with all the diving going on around the globe. It's quite surreal."
