Jay Leno explains the surgeries he underwent after a car accident burned his face. He received "a new ear," and had multiple skin grafts placed on his face. In a separate incident, he also broke several bones when he fell off a motorcycle.
Jay Leno is a car and motorcycle enthusiast, but after two recent serious accidents he must be wondering if his vehicles love him too. In the first accident, he had to have parts his face recreated. The second left him with multiple broken bones.
The comedian gave an update about his recent mishaps and recovery while chatting with CNN anchor Chris Wallace in the latest episode "Who's Talk to Chris Wallace" from his Max series.
Leno's fans have commented on how good he looks following a garage fire in November 2022 that left him with third-degree burns to his chest, face and hands. Leno gives credit to "a very, very good doctor" who detailed the severity of his injuries.
He told Wallace that "ears like paper go up in a fire, so they have to make you a brand new one." Leno's right ear appeared to have been completely rebuilt after the accident.
Wallace said that both his ears looked the same. Leno replied, "Yeah. I had a good doctor." Wallace then asked him to tell him what the ear is made of.
Leno replied, "It's fake skin." Leno joked that it was not the same material as on his face.
He said that people think skin grafts cost a lot. "I have a close friend who is a mohel. He gave me a big bag and I couldn't tell how many there were.
Wallace responded, "It is funny." It doesn't even look like foreskin. The mohel performs Jewish circumcisions.
Leno replied, "No, No, but when I am excited... Well, forget it."
Wallace had already teed up that shot for him. How could he have not taken a swing? Even the anchor acknowledged it by laughing: "Wow, that's me!
They then moved on to Leno’s subsequent accident, where he fractured his collarbone and ribs as well as both kneecaps. Leno said that the accident happened just a few months ago, and it was his fault.
It would have been a classic fall, if not for his serious injuries. Leno might even have done it himself on "The Tonight Show."
He explained, "I cut through a lot of parking but there were two posts with a metal chain across them." Unfortunately, the chain was not marked with flags and he missed it completely. Len explained that if he had been driving at 50 or 60 mph, he would have been decapitated.
Leno, who had broken and cracked bones in his face, also tore it up, saying that he "called the face guy again", and then went and got it fixed again.
Are either of these injuries enough to make him get off his bikes and out of his garage? Leno did not understand the concept when asked. Instead, he reverted to the old saying, It could be worse.
"Oh, he killed himself. He wasn't with any woman, was it?" he quipped. "Okay, that's fine."
