Jeopardy! Champion Jake DeArruda won three games. He walked away with almost $70,000, but he also left with an embarrassing statistic. He never correctly guess any Final Jeopardy clues. This was his downfall.
DeArruda was a Ludlow, Vermont-based delivery driver. He won $22,797 even though he misread the Final Jeopardy clue. The clue was for "World Cinema" and it stated that "The 2007 biopic called La Momein France, meaning "The Kid", was released in the U.S.A under this other French title." DeArruda, along with the other players, incorrectly answered the Final Jeopardy clue.
DeArruda was again the winner, but this time without correctly answering the final clue. The category was Word Origins and DeArruda and the other contestants failed to correctly answer the final clue. "Originally relating to suffering, this word now most commonly refers to strong emotions of any kind," was the final clue. DeArruda's mortal did not answer, but he added $25,197 to his winnings.

DeArruda continued Deja vu on the third day. All three contestants incorrectly answered the final clue. The champ was unable to be found this time. The last clue was "5 U.S. States have 6-letter names; only those 2 west of Mississippi River border each others." DeArruda only knew Kansas and placed $333.
After winning $68,661, DeArruda ended his three-day streak. The champ was in the lead going into the final round, but he lost to one of the players who finally had the clue. The contestants were informed that the book was published in 2011. The contestants were told that James' last novel, death comes to Pemberley was a sequel to the novel from 200 years ago." DeArruda again answered incorrectly. But Patti Palmer, a retired teacher and bookseller, knew that it was Pride & Prejudice.
DeArruda, lucky for us, has already blogged about his experience on Jeopardy! While he doesn’t mention the final clue as a strategy but he does say that getting into the final round was his best opportunity, especially considering he was up against Troy Meyer, 6-day champion. "I know Troy is difficult to out-know," DeArruda admitted. "So beating Troy would be down to being aggressive, getting a break or two, and possibly leading into [Final Jeopardy]".
DeArruda's strategy worked until the last clue was correctly answered by another contestant. Maybe DeArruda was right, and $68,661 is an amazing three-day total.
