Sly also shared with Bernthal the advice he gave him following his father's death.
Jon Bernthal doesn't mince words when it comes sharing his truths on his podcast "Real Ones," even when he has to deal with Hollywood heavyweights like Sylvester Stallone.
After Pete Davidson, a SNL alum, shared his memories of growing up with Sly and his father who were big fans of the "Rocky" and "Rambo franchises, the topic of the '80s action hero was brought up.
Pete's grandfather, Harvey Keitel, was able to call an old school friend of Pete's, because of their mutual love for all things Stallone.
"When I was a child, my grandfather called Harvey. He was like, 'He's big Stallone fan. Can you get an autograph?'," Pete said to Bernthal. "Stallone wrote, "To Peter, keep punching. Sylvester Stallone. Rocky III poster, where he looks like a god.
Pete said, "And that was the coolest thing i had in a long while."
Bernthal noted that "Stallone texted me last Wednesday and he signed it. No bulls 'keep punching'."
"That's amazing!" "And dude, I will!" Pete replied. "I recall reading that and being like okay'," Davidson replied, acknowledging how motivating these words were for him as a child, after losing his father.
"Meanwhile he was probably taking some s--- and being like, 'Who is that for? Peter? Whatever.' He said, "But to me it changed the course of my life." "And that's the thing people don't realize is just how important that means to them."
The star of "The Punisher", then shared another experience with Stallone, from the 2013 film "Grudge Match".
Bernthal said, "I had the exact same experience with Stallone." "I loved him so much that we did a movie together. It was cataclysmic. It was like a complete f---ing catastrophe with him."
"My second son, who was just born, was a boxing movie. He was fighting Robert De Niro, and I was De Niro’s son," he explained.
"Oh Grudge Match!" That movie is my favorite! Pete exclaimed. Pete exclaimed, "Travesty to me!" "Heroic to me!"
The "The Walking Dead” star continues his story. He said he was in New Orleans for a fitting of a costume when he had no choice but to fly home to Los Angeles.
"My son was born very early. He was almost eight weeks premature. Bernthal said that he spent his first two months in NICU, and that he didn't get out of the hospital. He weighed in at 3 pounds.
The actor said, "I was in New Orleans to see the s---. I flew home because my son was getting out from the hospital. It was going to be like the first chance I was gonna like hold him and be with them." "When I arrived in LA from New Orleans, I got a call saying that Yeah Sly wanted me to come back in New Orleans for a boxing rehearsal.
"I'm like, 'For what? For boxing rehearsal?'" Bernthal protested, but he claimed that he was told "You gotta return on a plane for boxing practice." As if I hadn't left the airport. It's okay, it's cool.
Bernthal, who was back in New Orleans, said that he visited a warehouse converted into a gym. There were posters of Stallone all over the walls. Like murals and s ---."
He stated that Sly and De Niro were already in the ring. He said that Sly called him out "Yo!" when he entered the gym. You're next."
After the film legends had been completed, Sly called it. He says, "Alright everyone go home."
"And I'm like, what the f--- did you come here for?" Bernthal, who had missed his son's hospital release, recalled that he flew back across the country.
Sly was then said to have gone into the back of the gym. He was annoyed, but Greg Rementer, the legendary stunt coordinator, offered him to spar. As they were boxing in the Ring, a woman walked out of the back room and began to rummage through Bernthal's bag.
Bernthal informed Davidson in the podcast that it is against boxing gym etiquette for someone to touch their gear. Pete however stated that it's just human nature not to go through another person's stuff.
Bernthal stated that he asked the woman about her life and she replied that they wanted to buy Stallone this Thai boxing liniment. "Sly loves this ---. He recalled her saying to him that she was giving him a massage.
He protested that it was hard to obtain, and she said, "But he loves this ---,'" so he took it anyway." Pete joked that he had 40 posters here and could go to get the lotion.
Bernthal stated that Sly left the gym 45 minutes later in a suit.
"And the woman came out and said, 'By and the way, we're just going ahead and keep that lotion, 'cause Sly really loves it,'" he recalled. "I was still wearing my head and mouthguard, so I ran after him. I was like, "Hey Sly! Man, I know where I am from. If you need to borrow anything from me, ask them."
"He was like Yo! "He was like 'Yo!' and I'm like, 'No! You took my s---.'"
Bernthal recounted, "He's like, 'Yo. I let you box at my gym.'" "And dude, he was like, ‘F---it, I'll return it.’ I was like, 'F--- it, I'll give it back.' It was so terrible bro!
Bernthal maintained his position and said that he and Stallone reached a better place. He concluded, "I will admit that after that, it was like me and him really did bond."
