Louis-Dreyfus: "I never approached it in the context of my gender per se." "I just wanted to play with everyone."
Julia Louis-Dreyfus explains that in the early days of "Seinfeld", she had to fight for her iconic character Elaine Bened to receive more screen time.
The actress told the Daily Beast's "The Last Laugh" podcast that she would ask Jerry Seinfeld to continue writing for her.
Louis-Dreyfus started by saying, "I never approached it in the context of my gender per se." "I just wanted to play with everyone."
She said, "I won't lie, at first, I didn’t always have much to do in some episodes." "I would tell Larry and Jerry, on multiple occasions, that I needed to be more involved in the show. This is what I did. "And they did."
The actress said, "But see, they did not write for me as woman." They wrote for me and this character instead of this gender. I find this instructive from a writing perspective.
Louis-Dreyfus received seven Emmy Award nominations in a row during her time on the mega sitcom. She won the award in 1996.
