You might be wondering, given the title, "What in the Jeffrey Dahmer?" We think the same thing. Although TikTok is a great place to discover new things, it can also be scary for those who are looking for strange trends. Examples of this include the use period blood to make a face mask.

Despite its oddity, the menstrual masque has attracted some attention. The #periodbloodfacemask has been viewed over 3.5 million times on TikTok.

What are Period Masks?

A period mask is a method of applying period blood to the skin. People who adhere to this unusual beauty trend claim that although it may seem strange, the benefits of applying blood to their faces are many. Their skin is glowing and clearer since they've received nutrients through their blood.

These unquestioning TikTokers believe whatever they want, but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. A dermatologist produced a video that explained why the product is bad for your skin and potentially unsafe.

original sound - Dr. Joyce Dermatologist

Dr. Joyce explains why this trend is not for everyone in her video. She mentions that the menstrual fluid used in this new trend is not collected in an sterile manner. The blood could contain bacteria, sweat, or other harmful substances. She says that if you have an infection "down here", you can transmit bacteria and viruses to your face from your genital area.

Dr. Joyce also denied that a menstrual mask could be similar to a PRP therapy. Kim Kardashian became famous for posting a photo of her bloody face to social media. She says that period blood is composed of red blood cells as well as white blood cells, platelets and bacteria.

The "vampire facial", which is not a DIY treatment, is made from platelet-rich plasma. Dr. Joyce explains that we are actually extracting blood from your veins in a sterile manner and then spinning it down to collect only your platelets. This will remove only red and white cells. Vampire facials, although it sounds very similar, are performed in a hospital setting without any contaminants. It is not recommended to attempt self-administration and collection.

It is not recommended to use menstrual blood on your skin. There are many safe and clinically proven options for skincare that you can use instead of this dreadful beauty trend.
