Late BMX Star Pat Casey Honored At This Year's X Games

If not for the tragic accident, the 3-time medalist could have participated at this year's X Games.

The X Games held in Ventura County, California, over the weekend honored BMX legend Pat Casey who passed away in June following a dirt-bike accident.

Casey was a superstar in extreme sports. He was only 29 when he died, but he had won three X Games Medals during his career, which began at 14 years of age, the first time he became a professional.

The Ventura County Fairgrounds was awash with athletes competing at this weekend's event. They wore "Pat Casey Forever", emblazoned on their t-shirts, competition gear and other apparel. Casey's Monster Energy teammates showed immense support. Pat Casey would have been at the X Games this year if not for the tragic accident.

Fans adorned the fairgrounds with t-shirts, stickers and placards in tribute to him. There were also medals and stunts that paid homage.

Many fans were in attendance and expressed their sentiments that this was Pat's last appearance at the X Games.

Casey's wife Chase Casey, their son Reid (already a BMX rider) and daughter Taytum (7 years old), are the only survivors.

Jamie Bestwick, BMX legend and Casey's father were present at the BMX Dirt Run on Saturday.

Bestwick said that Bestwick was "driven by his commitment, courage, and unwavering desire to prove the impossible was absolutely achievable".

"He knew that the greatest glory of living is not never falling but rising each time we fall."

He concluded that Pat was an example of fatherhood, devotion and love for a family and a woman he loved. "Today, let's go gold for Pat Casey."

Ryan Williams, who won the gold medal in the BMX Best Trick Competition that afternoon pledged to give his entire prize money back to Casey's parents and siblings.

Casey was only 14 when he won his first X Games Medal (bronze). The following year, he won silver. In 2021, Casey won his first gold medal.

He died on June 6, after losing control of the bike at Slayground Motorcross Park, Ramona in California.
