It's likely you've seen it on Instagram and TikTok. People all over the world have been trying to remove the grime and residue from towels, sheets and clothes with the laundry stripping hashtag.

These people have washers and dryers. This trend seems to have the greatest appeal because the water turns brown, which "shows" how dirty seemingly clean items may be. What's the deal? Is laundry stripping necessary? Or is it a trend that's not worth the effort?

What is Laundry Stripping?

It's not a new method to clean towels or bedding, but stripping laundry is very popular. The new trend was popularized by cleaning queens such as Mrs. Lauren Elms and Vanesa Almaro.

Warm water and a mix of cleaning products should be added to the bathtub. You will need to add Borax, OxyClean, Tide powder laundry detergent, and Tide powder laundry detergent. The next step is to add your laundry to the mixture and allow them to soak. Some laundry can be left to soak for up to five hours. Some items that are particularly dirty or difficult to clean may need to soak for up 24 hours.

TikTokers warn you that you should not strip colored clothes. Dark colors are more prone to bleeding, and may leave you with dark-colored water. It is best to separate light-colored and darker-colored laundry.

How to Strip Laundry

Although the recipes may vary, one constant theme is Powder laundry detergent, OxyClean and Borax.

• Step 1: Heat the water in the tub.
• Step 2: Add 1/4 cup Borax, 1/4 Cup OxyClean and 1/2 cup powder laundry detergent
• Step Three: Stir mixture together
• Step 4: Add your laundry to the water and stir occasionally
• Step Five: Allow laundry to soak for about five hours, or until the water cools.
• Step Six: Pour laundry in the washer for a quick cycle

Laundry items you shouldn't strip

Avoid washing delicate items in the laundry stripper. These items can be put in the delicate cycle, or may need to go to the laundry mat. For items with natural fibers, or other features that should not be submerged in hotwater, you can skip the laundry stripping step.

You may not achieve the desired results every time. This laundry hack should be used sparingly. First, the water required to fill the bathtub is a lot. Then, you need to wash the tub with even more water if any residue remains. You should be using your washer and dryer correctly (i.e. If you're using your washing machine correctly (i.e., not using too many laundry detergent), your laundry might not need to be deep cleaned.
