Matthew Lawrence, who claims to have been teased by a Marvel superhero but refused to strip in a hotel room of a director -- Joey Lawrence also says that he has had similar experiences -- discusses the double standard when it comes male sexual harassment.
Matthew Lawrence doesn't name names, but makes a shocking allegation about an encounter he claims to have had with an Oscar-winning filmmaker in a hotel -- an incident he says led to his being dropped by his agent.
Matthew told the story during his latest "Brotherly Love podcast" where he discussed this alleged incident in which he was asked to strip naked. This led to an extended discussion about what Matthew views as a dual standard when it came to male sexual harassment.
Matthew claims that he has been "promised" to have a "huge role" "many times." Matthew then detailed the alleged incident without specifying any details.
Matthew stated, "I lost my agency after I went to a hotel room of an Oscar-winning director, who asked me to remove my clothes and took Polaroids," Matthew said.
He added that he had been told "if I do X, Y, and Z, I will be the next Marvel Character."
Matthew claims that he did not do any of these things. "My agency fired me for leaving this director's office."
Matthew and his cohosts Joey Lawrence and Andrew Lawrence then had a more in-depth discussion about the #MeToo campaign, which Matthew believes has been very positive. Matthew also believes that there is a double-standard when it comes men and women who are willing to speak out about sexual harassment.
He cited Terry Crews as an example of how men are allegedly less supported when they come forward. Crews claimed he had been groped at a Hollywood party by a Hollywood agent; the agent denied this. The two settled their lawsuit out of court.
Matthew said that Terry Crews came out and admitted it. People were laughing at him. "People don't support him. He was thrown out. Why?"
Matthew went on to say, "Because it's a masculine man." "I think that our society is more receptive to hearing about this situation with men as opposed to women."
Matthew acknowledges that this problem is more common with women but says that it also happens to him. He has had similar experiences with many of his male colleagues.
Joey shared with his brother that he had also experienced similar situations. "There were many," he said, but it all came down to principles. "I was never going to do that, you know?" He said. "I also lost out on many parts." Big movie parts."
Matthew says that men also go through it, even if it is a woman or a man in power, but they don't talk about it in public, at least partly because they fear the reaction they will get.
