Madison Schemitz (17) thanked "heroic" mom and the "man who saved my live" for intervening when her ex-boyfriend Spencer Pearson, allegedly, attacked her with knife before slicing himself throat.
A little more than a month after allegedly being stabbed 15 time in a parking lot of a restaurant, the Florida teenager speaks out about her recovery.
Madison Schemitz, 17, made her first public statement since the incident on June 3. She spoke at a Brooks Rehabilitation press conference held Friday. Spencer Pearson, Madison's ex-boyfriend, is accused of stabbing her, her mother, and an unidentified Good Samaritan before turning the blade on himself. Pearson was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and battery.
Schemitz began his interview with reporters by thanking the first responders and all medical professionals, including nurses, therapists, and therapists, "who kept my life" after the assault. The teen, who was stabbed both in the neck and the back, also expressed gratitude to the community for its "outpouring" of support.
"I thank my family and friends for being there day in and day out." My mom was my hero that day. "My love for her was endless, and I am so fortunate to be her child," said Schemitz.
Jacki Roge was also stabbed in the leg, and in the forehead , after she stepped in to protect her teenage daughter.
Schemitz thanked Kennedy Armstrong for intervening as well when he witnessed the attack.
She continued: "Kennedy will always be my hero, and we are now family for all time."
Armstrong was also stabbed in the encounter. According to a Update on Go Fund Me from Madison's Family, Schemitz and Madison reconnected later at the hospital. Jacki wrote on June 26:
"We met our HERO Kennedy Armstrong!" What a wonderful young man. We are so lucky to call him our family. No words can express how grateful we are. Kennedy did not hesitate or show any fear. That is beyond admirable. Madison's smile is priceless. No one can break her. Thank you for your continued support! "#madisonstrong"
He was in the audience of the press conference where Schemitz, her mother, and her friends were present.
"I don't think there's any turning back." Madison went on to say that "everything happens for a purpose." I'm lucky to be alive and I will live each day and make a positive difference in the world.
She then revealed that she was paralyzed "from the chest down" in regards to her recovery. "I know it will be a difficult road but I'm confident that I can achieve my goal of walking again one day. "Thank you for your support so far. My story is just beginning."
She also said that she is starting a One Love Foundation chapter at her high-school, explaining that the organization "is about creating a culture in which relationship violence does not exist."
According to Pearson’s arrest warrant he “began to harass and follow” Schemitz in April. Madison's sister told First Coast News their mother "wanted to get a restraint order against him."
Pearson also "sliced himself several times, telling witnesses that he was trying to kill himself." In his booking picture, the stitches visible on his neck are proof that he survived.
Pearson, who graduated in May from the same high-school as Schemitz, is still in jail, without bond.
Schemitz replied, "It's going to be okay" when asked what she would say to other survivors. Every day is its own day, and you must take each day as it comes.
