The actor apologized to his fans in a statement made posthumously.
Paul Reubens died aged 70. He was best known for his role as Pee Wee Herrman.
A statement on his Instagram page reads: "Last Night we said goodbye to Paul Reubens. An iconic American actor and comedian who was a writer, producer, and writer whose beloved Pee-wee Herman charmed generations of children and grownups with his optimism, whimsy, and belief in kindness."
The statement said that "Paul fought cancer bravely, privately and for many years with his trademark wit and tenacity." He will always be remembered as a gifted and prolific comedian, and a man of exceptional character and generosity.
Reubens released a statement posthumously on the post. He wrote, "Please accept this apology for not being public about what I have been going through the past six years."
"I've always felt an enormous amount of love and support from my fans, friends and supporters. "I have loved you so much and I enjoyed creating art for you," said the artist.
The actor, who died in 2016, began his career in improv in the 1970s with The Groundlings. He then became famous as Pee Wee, starring in Tim Burton's Pee Wee's Big Adventure, its 1988 sequel, Big Top PeeWee, and his morning show for children, PeeWee's Playhouse. He brought back the character for the 2016 Netflix movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
He has also appeared in movies such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Mystery Men, and Blow.
Judd Apatow commented, "This is devastating," on the announcement of Paul's death. We got to work with Paul for many years on PeeWee's Big Holiday, and we got to see his kindness and genius up close. He made everyone so happy! Watching him live was one of the most hilarious things I've ever done. He is irreplaceable. "
Paul was great. Norman Reedus commented, "Really gonna miss [him], while The Office alum Kate Flannery said, "He will be in our hearts for ever! #RIPPEEWEEHERMAN"
Karen Elson, a model, added: "Oh Paul. My heart breaks. "Thank you for making me laugh, for bringing joy to my birthday and for always making me smile with your sweet messages."
