He stated that there was no doubt that wearing a helmet saved him from certain death.
Richard Branson shared with his followers that he was "recovering well," after suffering a "colossal” cycling accident this week.
In a video posted to Instagram Wednesday by the founder of Virgin Group, he recounted his story, adding the caption "Recovering well after a massive cycling crash." We are fine, but there were some bumps and bruises. Here's how it happened ..."
When his brakes stopped working, the 71-year old was participating in the Strive Challenge.
"We were going downhill, and we had to stop hard because there was a van ahead of us. Richard said to me in a very gentle and kind manner, "My brakes are failing!" The next thing I know, he jumps on my bike and we both crash," Stellmaszek said to Branson's viewers in the video.
Both were in good spirits and Stellmaszek joked that he'd never had anyone push him off the road. He was so kind and gentle, I have to admit."
Branson also shared another account via his blog. He wrote: "I was navigating an extremely steep corner with a huge cliff drop to my right, a car coming down the hill, and Felix Stellmaszek (a fellow Striver) in front of the car passing the car. I pulled on both my brakes but they didn’t respond. I was moving faster than ever, and my options were to either drop off the cliff or hit the car. Or maybe run into Felix.
"I held both brakes tightly, but the brakes didn't work. Later I learned that I should have taken one hand off each brake and squeezed it again. Felix gave me a warning: "Brakes not working!" He continued, "But he was unable to get out of the way." "We crashed - hard."
Branson acknowledged that the accident could have been worse and said that helmets saved their lives. Branson, 71, suffered severe injuries to his elbow and "an extraordinarily large bump on my hip" and a massive hemorhage on his leg.
Branson has been in a number of bad biking accidents before. In 2016, Branson shared with us that he had fractured his cheek and tore ligaments in another accident.
He said, "For those who were fortunate enough to have suffered terrible near misses but walked away from them, they're very lucky." Many people never walk away. But I will not stop taking on new challenges and adventures. It's how I have always lived my whole life."
