The phrase "butt flap fashion", I will admit, sounds a little too cute. My head was filled with images of Christmas-themed pajamas for a family, also known as "flapjack" pajamas. The spring runway look I was seeing was much more chic and less cheeky.

Many designers, from Chanel to Prada, had the snarky-sounding "butt flap" skirts on their runways for their 2022 Spring collections. But, they were anything but silly.

The asymmetrical addition of fabric to the back made a bold statement. It adds some function as well as dramatic flair.

What is a 'Butt Flap?

The look isn’t quite a hi–low skirt. Instead, it features a structured skirt with a medium-to-long train. Some looks included an additional panel of fabric at the back.

Take a cue form Chanel for a more structured, simple look.

The example shown above is a shirt-back miniskirt, as the design house called it. It has a more casual feel than a train, and is worn around the waist. Both looks are beautiful, but it is hard to deny that they both look stunning.

The Look is Actually Functional

It's happened to all of us. We have tried it. You don't have to worry about sticky chairs again with a little bit of extra fabric at the back. It's almost like a seat cover.

For those with "blessed backsides", having some extra coverage in the rear can prove to be a blessing.

Trends to Expect This Spring

Although we don't expect this look to dominate the streets by Spring 2022, there could be some modifications. It could be that high-low skirts are making a comeback. For those who want more coverage, mid-length skirts can be a practical choice.

Vogue says we can expect mini-skirts in bold colors and patterns similar to the Chanel look. Other major takeaways were the use of flowy fabrics, sun-soaked colours, and transparent fabrics.
