This is the season when families get together to celebrate their most treasured holiday traditions. Kwanzaa is an African American holiday that many families cherish. However, we are pretty certain that none of these families will make the "Kwanzaa" cake made famous by Sandra Lee. Lee tied Kwanzaa's pasty monster with a clumsy twist. It is made from angel food cake, chocolate cinnamon frosting and apple pie filling. This cake is haunted every year at this time.
The Famous Kwanzaa Cake's Origins
Sandra Lee didn't expect her "Kwanzaa" cake to become viral. The average reaction was ridicule and mockery. We can see why Lee called the final product a harvest cake. The final presentation is not as good because there's too much of everything in the recipe.
The corn nut garnishes are not enough to make the cake look appealing. Lee added five red, green, and black tapered candles to tie the cake to Kwanzaa. It's difficult to know where to begin when there are so many ways to make this cake. It's good that we had a year to prepare.
So Many Problems and So Little Time
The first problem with the video was the way Lee calls corn nuts "acorns". Although the clip was removed from the Food Network, it is still available in YouTube clips. Although technically edible, acorns must be prepared with special techniques to remove toxic chemicals that could cause bitterness and make them safe for consumption.
Lee has added a teaspoon vanilla extract to the cinnamon-chocolate frosting, which sounds absolutely delicious. The angel food cake is equally delicious on its own. The baked delight took a twist when Lee added corn nuts to the mix and sprinkled pumpkin seeds on top.
Sandra Lee, Why Add Candles?
While the candles are a part of Kwanzaa celebrations, they look out of place. Lee suggested that you make small holes in the cake using a knife to ensure the candles have a stable place to rest. One YouTube commenter claimed that the candles looked like missiles sticking out of the cake. We can't help but agree.
The apple pie filling is perhaps the biggest fault of this cake. It's made to look like a bundt, so Lee poured a whole can of apple pie filling into the middle and then topped it with another dollop. Lee slices herself a slice, and the camera clearly shows she has no apple pie filling. This begs the question: What's the point in those apples?

It looks like the recipe was just thrown together, which is evident when you look at the final product. It's difficult to forget what a mess it is. It's no wonder that it returns year after year. It will hopefully continue to live in infamy for many more years.
