Ramirez responds to the backlash against Miranda's standup comedian lover.
Sara Ramirez's CheDiaz has been the subject of a lot of criticism on "And Just Like That" since the beginning. Ramirez isn't immune to the backlash.
Ramirez, who like Che is nonbinary and uses the they/them pronouns in real life, spoke to The New York Times about being the target of long-time "Sex and the City” fans. Some weren't thrilled to hear that Cynthia Nixon's Miranda had left her long-term love Steve to start a relationship.
"I am aware of hate online but I must protect my mental health and my artistic expression. Ramirez said that this is more important for me than ever because I am a human being. I'm proud of the representation we have created. We created a character that is human, flawed, complex, and not meant to be liked. They are here to be themselves.
"I am not also in control of the writing. I appreciate the passion people bring to this representation. Ramirez said that there are many different people who come to the table and speak truth to power in their own ways in real life. They all have different landing spots with different people. Che Diaz also has their own audience who get a kick from what they do.
Ramirez was asked what Che would think of some of the criticism. He said that they would likely reply with something "very funny and silly and funny" as a rebuttal. There might also be a bit of self-deprecation and a reminder that "no one is perfect."
And just like that Finale Recap: Carrie moves on from Big with [SPOILER]
Although "And Just Like That," which just wrapped its first season, hasn’t been approved for Season 2, it seems that Che won’t be leaving if the show returns. Warning!
Season 1 ended with Che becoming a TV pilot. They had to relocate to the West Coast temporarily and invited Miranda along. Miranda, once again sporting her red hair, was seen heading to the airport. She had decided to quit her internship and finish her classes remotely to support Diaz's new career venture.
The first season of "And Just Like That", Season 1, is now streaming.
