She said, "They made me wear high heels." They had not yet established my outfit, but they insisted I wear heels.

Sarah Hyland shares some of her less-than-favorable memories from filming Modern Family .

Hyland spoke with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his dinner on Me Podcast about her struggles to work on the show despite her health issues.

"I was focused on just about surviving, knowing my lines, and being 100 percent there when they shouted 'action,' and then collapsing immediately when they shouted 'cut'," recalled Hyland.

Hyland, born with kidney dysplasia, has spoken out about her past transplants. She also spoke about the time she had to wear heels in spite of "excruciating" pain from gout.

Ferguson noted an episode where she felt "a great deal of pain" as her character had to push a vehicle.

"I had gout!" Hyland said, "I had gout!" "I was on Dialysis... It was Wild."

She said, "They made me wear high heels." They had not yet established my outfit, but they insisted I wear heels.

Hyland thanked Ferguson despite the difficulties she faced on set.

She told her co-star, "I want you to know how grateful I am for this."

Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, a condition in which the kidneys do not develop normally during pregnancy. In the last two years, she has also been diagnosed with endometriosis as well as an abdominal hernia.

In October 2017, Hyland began to reject her kidney. This was years after her first kidney transplant, where her father donated the organ. The kidney was not functioning properly despite all the efforts to "save it". Hyland was put on dialysis which had many side effects, including weight loss.

She opened up for Self Magazine. "It's not. "But it does."

She added, "I was depressed." "I had been contemplating suicide for a very long time." "I've had to deal with health problems for 26 years. I was always a burden."

But dialysis was not enough. She needed a new kidney after the transplanted one was removed. They found a match in Summer 2017 -- her brother Ian.

Hyland, through tears, said, "When you have a second family, someone who you are supposed to take care of like a little sibling, and they want to give you a third shot at life." It's frightening, because you do not want to let them down. "I felt a great deal of pressure to ensure that it was perfect."
