Parker and Michael Patrick King, the creator of the revival, confirm that Cattrall was not asked to be a part.
After Samantha Jones' original star Kim Cattrall left, "Sex and the City" needed to be resurrected.
With the premiere season of the revival currently available at HBO Max, Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker spoke to Variety about their efforts to overcome that embarrassing casting omission. They started with the fact that she was never asked to return.
King said that the show has never spoken to Cattrall about Cattrall appearing in the next season. "She's said what she said." King stated that he doesn't have any realistic expectations of Kim Cattrall appearing in the new season, and that he is not optimistic.
Even if Cattrall decided to retake the role, Parker wouldn't be on board.
She explained that she didn't think she would because she has a public history of sharing her feelings. "I haven’t read or participated in articles, but people would like to let me know."
She continued, "We didn’t go to Kim because of this, you know." "After we couldn't make the movie and the studio couldn’t meet her needs, we need to listen to her and understand her priorities. It wasn't important or necessary for us.
SJP continued to say that Samantha is still part of the show, and believes they handled Samantha on the revival with such respect and elegance, without making her a villain.
Parker said that "She was a human being with feelings about a relationship. So I believe we found a way for her to address them which was important and necessary for those who loved her." "There is a distinct line between Samantha & Kim."
