These phone calls were horrifying and explicit, and included Subway's spokesperson explaining how to obtain "whatever age" in Thailand and "nice, pure bodies of other children".
Warning This article contains horrifying quotes from Jared Fogle's actual phone calls in which he describes sexual abuse of children.
Jared Fogle's crimes are detailed in "Jared From Subway: Catching A Monster," a new ID documentary. It includes disturbing and downright disgusting phone calls from the Subway spokesperson bragging and planning sex.
Fogle is currently in prison serving 15 years for sex offences involving minors. But it was difficult to get him behind bars. Rochelle Herman, a journalist, talks about her years of trying to get Fogle arrested after he admitted to her that middle-school aged girls were "hot" before an interview with her for a Sarasota TV station.
Although she was shocked, she didn't have any evidence and didn't immediately report to the police. She instead began to talk with him by phone and recorded their conversations as he began to share his bizarre thoughts, plans, and actual crimes.
Herman stated in the doc that he gave the impression that he could confide with her. He claimed that he was initially very flirtatious with her and invited her to his hotel room to ask her to do her hair in pigtails. He kept in touch with her via long distance telephone even though she fled. She eventually asked Fogle what made him interested in "very young people" and he replied, "They just possess such nice, pure bodies,"
Fogle replied, "I don’t know, middle school, or whatever." She asked him, "Like 9-10?" He replied, "Like 9 or 10?" That would be very hot.
Fogle continued to ask Fogle "what kind of cute friend" her children had. She replied, "I think that girl who came from a broken home could be a possibility. She then took her recordings to the FBI. After that, she worked for many years with the FBI, listening to Herman's sick fantasies as well as real-life experiences.
She asked Fogle about Fogle's youngest friend, and he replied, "I think 11-12... She doesn't know her name. The FBI could not locate any victims and there was no physical evidence to support it, so they took a long time making arrests.
Fogle described, in horrendous detail, his "most unusual" experience as they continued their conversation.
"It was Thailand. I would love for you to come with me. You can be whatever age you want. He said, "It's crazy, it's so easy over there." "Different ages. You can choose whom you want, and then there is a cost. And you're good to go."
Fogle, aged 10-11, was often seen in the country by Herman. Viewers heard Fogle describe one interaction as "so ******* hot". He replied to her when she said it was impossible for him to go to Thailand every day.
The FBI had already planned a sting operation against Herman in 2009 to capture Fogle travelling to Florida to have sex with minors. Herman invited Fogle to Sarasota to celebrate her son's birthday. As they talked, their conversations quickly turned sexual.
Herman also asked Fogle if there were "any kind" of personalities to be aware of when selecting children. He said, "I think that girl coming from a broken home could be a possibility. He simply said to her, "Okay. Tell me about her."
Fogle started asking questions about Herman's children, and their conversations took on a more personal tone.
"Will your do whatever I tell you? Would you allow me to see your children naked? He asked her one of the calls. "What if we put cameras in your children's rooms?" They would be OK with it? Which would you prefer? In your son's or in your daughter's bedroom? Which do you prefer? Please tell me.
The party didn't take place and the FBI investigation did not lead to an arrest. Herman also sought help from the local police, but they were also held responsible. Fogle would not be arrested until the FBI began looking into Russell Taylor, Fogle's business partner in a bestiality probe. After hidden cameras and images found in Taylor's house, including some that were sent to Fogle directly, the FBI began investigating child porn.
Herman says that Fogle's involvement in Fogle’s case had a lasting impact on her health.
"The debilitating effects of PTSD I've suffered from this experience has been devastating. She said that it is true that when someone experiences such a stressful environment for so long, it makes them more susceptible to other things.
Herman stated that she didn't regret Fogle's victims but that she regretted it. However, she said that she felt that the victims "tore apart my relationship with my kids." Her son, who also moved to Taiwan, said that it led to a difficult relationship with his sister and mother.
Herman expressed dismay at Fogle's sentencing toward the end of the documentary, saying that "there's 14 victims." Is 15 years enough?
"Jared From Subway: Catching a Monster” is now streaming on Discovery+.
