A car accident killed a Swedish artist who had survived multiple murder plots over his drawing the Prophet Muhammad.

BBC reported that Lars Vilks and two of his bodyguards were killed when their car collided into a truck in the vicinity of Markaryd, southern Sweden.

Although police are not sure what caused the accident, they do not believe that foul play was involved. The truck driver sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital where he was examined by investigators.

"... at first, there's nothing to indicate that someone else was involved," police stated in a statement.

Aftonbladet was told by a witness that he was the first to arrive on the scene. He tried to put out the flames but it was too late.

According to him, the car seemed to have lost control and veered onto the other side of the motorway. The truck was unable to maintain a steady speed and collided with the truck at an "incredible velocity." The car crashed into the truck after it had crossed the wire fence that divided the motorway.

Investigators claim that tire remnants were found at the site of impact. This suggests that the car might have been damaged by a blowout.

Vilks was living under constant police surveillance. His 2007 drawing of the Prophet Muhammad on a dog's body sparked huge controversy.

Many Islamic countries condemned the publication. Al-Qaeda also placed a $150,000 bounty upon his head. His house was also attacked by firebombs, and several assassination plots were stopped.

Finn Norgaard, a Danish filmmaker, was killed at an Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression event organized by Vilks in 2015. Investigators believe that the bullets were intended for the organizer.

After killing another man at a synagogue he then shot himself in the head during a police shootout. It is believed that the Charlie Hebdo attack, which left 12 French citizens dead last month, inspired the attack.
