Lautner's critics apologized for their initial comments that he "looked so old." They wrote in the video's comments section, "We never meant to hurt him in any way." And they promised "to watch [their] future words."
Taylor Lautner has taken the high road in response to negative comments made about his appearance.
The 31-year old actor shared a video message on Monday on Instagram in which he responded to the hateful comments about his "age" and explained why it's important to put "value" into oneself.
"I've just come back from a long run." Lautner started by saying, "I was feeling great about myself. I'm trying to be healthy both physically and mentally." "I felt like I had to share this with you, because I went on Instagram after I finished that run."
The "Twilight' alum said he read a blog post last week about him and his wife Taylor Lautner (nee Dome), who appeared on a New York talk show to promote their mental health podcast "The Squeeze."
He continued, "I read a blog post last week from when Tay was in New York with me to do press on the squeeze." "We went on the show and they posted about it recently. I was reading through the comments, and it brought back old feelings and memories, which is why I don't read through comments. But I'm now in a new place, so I felt compelled share this with you. "I'm going to play a bit, then I'll show you the comments, and I'll return right away."
The video featured a series screenshots with horrible comments made by trolls regarding Lautner's looks.
One critic said, "He didn't age well goodness", while another wrote, "He aged as a raisin."
Another said, "Damn it looks like ---,"."
Lautner's hairline was also the subject of insults.
Lautner said, after showing the screenshots: "Those comments were all from one post. That's crazy. But that's our world, and there's not much we can change."
The "Twilight: New Moon's" star has said that, while the comments do still bother him, it is not to the same extent as they did in the past.
Lautner stated, "I really wanted to mention that if I had seen this 10 years ago or 5 years ago or maybe 2 years, 3 years ago it would have really gotten under my skin and made me want to hide in a hole. "Don't go to press conferences or interviews, and don't put yourself in a position where you have to see this kind of thing." At a certain stage, it became impossible to go anywhere, even to the grocery store. If I was seen I could be photographed and that picture could end up online. I had to see all of this.
He continued, "And that was an unhealthy situation to be in." "The reason I was there, and why it affected me so much, was because my value was based on the wrong things."
The actor from "Grown-Ups 2" went on to say that you should put "value" into yourself.
He said, "You'll feel the same way if you place your value on what others think about you." "But if your value is in yourself, you'll know who you are and what you're passionate about. That kind of stuff will not affect you. It's a blessing that I am able to see this. It bugs me, and I won't lie. "I wouldn't have posted this video on here if it didn’t bother me, but it doesn’t make me doubt who I am and it doesn’t take anything from me."
"My biggest message is to think and remember what you value in your life. "And also, just be nice," concluded he. It's not difficult. Be nice to one another. Spread love and positivity. It's so simple. "I love you all and I wish you a wonderful rest of the day."
Lautner captioned his video "Spread Love" and added a hashtag to Mental Health Awareness Month. Lautner also added another comment to his post. He wrote, "You get value from where you put it."
Lautner's video and message was praised by fans and celebrities alike in the comments section.
His wife shared a line of her husband's film: "It doesn't question who I am." She added, "God, I love you."
Clayton Echard, a former "Bachelor", wrote: "Loved that you shared this. This takes courage, strength and a lot of vulnerability. It's important that people realize the impact of their words. Social media is often a place where there's no accountability. Many people feel that they can freely post negative comments without repercussions, and in most cases there are none. There is a cost, and often it's paid by the person who receives the negativity. Your sharing will make others realize the impact of their words, and perhaps next time they'll think twice before hitting send. "Proud of you brother."
Kaitlyn, a fellow Bachelor Nation alum, added: "Holy Shoot." You are welcome. This was powerful. I need to sometimes practice what I preach. "Thank you."
In the comments, a user who had made a negative comment on Lautner in his video has apologized.
Lautner was criticized for his television appearance by someone who said, "Wait, he looks old. What happened?"
The critic commented on the video Monday, saying, "Hey, @taylorlautner, I'm glad you pointed me out." I regret not expressing myself better and never intended to hurt you. It was because I realized that I had also aged. You were on my television when I was a child. It reminds me my age when I see actors that I used to watch get older. I sincerely apologize and will be more careful with my words. I understand that they can cause a lot of harm. "I wish you only happiness."
