It has been revealed that the Ohio teenager had a toxic relationship with the boyfriend who died in the accident. She even threatened to crash the car while he sat in the passenger's seat.
Mackenzie Shirilla was found guilty of multiple murders last week. She had posted an abundance of tributes online to her deceased boyfriend after the fatal accident.
Shirilla posted photos of her and Dominic Russo, a 20-year old boyfriend to the online obituary of Dominic Russo.
"I miss you nug. "I miss you nug." I still have the feeling that your going to walk through the door at any moment. She wrote: "I miss your laugh, your perfect smile" in August of last year along with a picture of the two at Universal Studios.
"God, you are the last one to deserve it. You had a perfect future ahead of you. I wish I could have told you more." Another post said, "Please wait for me."
She shared several photos of them, including prom pictures.
The picture painted by the prosecutors during the four-day court trial was anything but idealistic. They proved convincingly that the relationship Shirilla had with Russo became increasingly toxic. This dynamic resulted in the death of two people -- Russo’s friend Davion, 19, who was a passenger of Shirilla's vehicle.
Shirilla and Russo broke up frequently during their three- to four-year relationship. Family and friends claimed she displayed "negative behavior" toward him. She is said to have spent the majority of this time living at her boyfriend's house.
Prosecutors have identified two key incidents.
Shirilla was driving on Interstate 71 two weeks prior to the fatal accident, with Russo in her car.
In the court document, it is stated that Russo called his mother to ask for someone else to pick him. Russo was eventually given a ride by a friend who had been on the phone when Shirilla said: "I'll crash this car now."
The friend who was supposed to drive Russo arrived and said Shirilla had been parked along the road. He saw Shirilla "striking Dominic" with both her hands. Dominic exited his vehicle and left."
Russo also recorded a conflict that occurred near the time the fatal accident.
Shirilla is heard in the video footage of Russo’s phone "degrading Dominic repeatedly, threatening him and damaging his property".
According to a court filing, Russo didn't want Shirilla in his house and was repeatedly heard trying to calm Shirilla.
"I miss you nug. "I miss you nug." I still think that you are just about to walk through the door. "I miss your laugh and your perfect smile."
The woman is heard to bang on the door, calling him "degrading names and highly inappropriate words."
She then reportedly threatened to lock his car. "You have to open the door now, or else there will be a serious problem."
Russo then ended the recording and called for his mother's help.
Shirilla's lawyers argued that Shirilla and the couple were not at odds with each other, but rather fought one another.
Shirilla, 17 years old at the time of her fatal accident, now faces life imprisonment after a judge found her guilty of multiple murder charges in July 2022 in the deaths of Russo, Flanagan, and others.
The sentence, announced Monday by the Cuyahoga Common Pleas court, is automatic and life without parole for 15-years. Shirilla, who is currently 19-years-old, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for 15 years.
"God, you are the last one to deserve it. You had such a wonderful life ahead of yourself... I wish that I told you more." Please wait for me."
Last week, Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said: "She had a purpose and she carried it out with precision." (Not related to Dominic Russo). "The decision was to die."
Shirilla was overcome by emotion and began to sob as the judge read the verdict. Deputies quickly handcuffed her while the verdict was being read. Shirilla's backers were visibly emotional as well during the reading.
Michael O'Malley, the prosecutor in the case, told the press that the video footage obtained from the nearby business that showed the moments before the accident was what led them to decide that Shirilla should be charged as an adult with murder.
O'Malley explained that the charge was justified when a driver drove for four to five seconds while letting the pedal go all the way until they hit 100 mph and crashed into a building.
A passerby noticed the crash in the early morning of July 31, 2022 and alerted authorities 45 minutes later.
Dominic Russo, Davion flanagan and Shirilla were found dead by police. Shirilla was found trapped in her car with one of Shirilla's Prada slippers stuck on the accelerator.
Judge Russo stated that Shirilla's video footage showed her morphing from a responsible driver into a "literal hell on wheels" in the moments leading up to the fatal accident.
The police charged her with murder, not driving under the Influence. The police also claimed that her phone showed she drove near the site of the fatal accident a few days before.
Shirilla was treated by doctors who said she felt "grief and guilt." The prosecution said the teenager had a "consciousness" of guilt.
Shirilla's lawyer argued that while it is normal for drivers involved in fatal accidents to feel guilty, that does not make them murderers. The defense also claimed that the prosecution had not provided enough evidence that Shirilla intentionally crashed, and that she did not just lose control when driving recklessly.
