His wife said that he made him a protein shake, just days after they had arsenic delivered to their house.
Aurora dentist, Colorado, was arrested on suspicion of poisoning his wife. The details from his arrest affidavit give a wild account of the circumstances.
According to local authorities, James Toliver Craig, 45, was arrested on Sunday for first-degree murder. According to the release, he is accused of "a heinous complex and calculated murder" after Angela, his wife, died in hospital. He was arrested following several trips for medical care within a short time.
Division Chief Mark Hildebrand said, "When the suspicious facts of this case were revealed, our team of officers homicide detectives tirelessly tried to uncover the truth behind victim's sudden illness death." It was quickly revealed that this was a complex, calculated and heinous murder. Our Major Crimes Homicide Unit was a credit to me for solving this case and seeking justice for the victim.
Craig's arrest warrant was obtained by The Daily Beast. It revealed details about the investigation, including text messages between Craig, his wife, and allegations of an affair. There were also suspicious internet searches and orders online.
According to documents, Angela was first admitted to the hospital on March 6th. She was discharged and returned to her home the following day. On the 15th, she returned with severe headaches and dizziness. She also had a seizure. The ventilator was placed on her and she was declared brain dead. She was then taken off life support.
After a fellow dentist from the same group raised suspicions that Angela had been poisoned, James was questioned by authorities. James claimed that James had recently ordered Potassium Cyanide to their dental practice, claiming that there was no medical reason for him to do so. James also admitted to "marital issues" with his wife, according to the business partner. These suspicions were then reported to police by the nurse.
James confronted the business partner over whether he had "said anything" to hospital staff. The man replied that he knew of the package James ordered. James, however, claimed that the package was a "ring for Angela" and that he wanted to surprise her with it. James claimed that Angela had asked him to order poison and that he didn't believe she would take it. James is also said to have sent text messages pleading with his partner not speak with authorities. He added, "Angela has gone and I am devastated."
An office manager claimed that Angela became dizzy and faint after she had consumed a protein shake. James also gave Angela extra protein for her tiredness. After Angela told him she was suicidal, a child protective services case worker believed that James was trying to fabricate a story about what actually happened. According to the case worker, Angela was the only person in the family who had ever experienced depression.
Based on these initial findings, a search warrant for James' house, dental office, cell telephone, laptop, and work computers was issued.
Authorities discovered that a new address had been created under James' Google account when they searched a computer in the office. Investigators found that the account was linked to internet searches for "how much pure arsenic will kill a human" and "is arsenic detectable at autopsy," as well as "top 5 undetectable poisons that show no signs of foul play" and "how do you make poison." According to reports, the account also contained records for Potassium Cyanide deliveries to the office on March 13 and his arsenic delivery at his home on March 4, two days before Angela was admitted to hospital.
Also, text messages showed alleged exchanges between Angela and James, including one on March 6, in which Angela thanked him for giving her a shake before later saying, "I feel drugged."
Authorities claim that they also found emails "intimate" in nature, which contained "sexually explicit conversations" between another woman. Police say James was visited by the other woman while his wife was sick in the hospital. Their flight itineraries match up with her hospital stays. According to the affidavit, James appears to have flown this woman into Denver while his wife, and mother of his children, was in the hospital. According to the doctors, the woman also stated that she understood how difficult he was going through. She wanted to be there but not pretend to be a friend.
Angela's sister allegedly said that James had "multiple relationships" during their marriage. Angela also claimed that Angela told Angela that James once "drugged" her in the past so he could give himself a lethal injection and kill himself. She claimed that James told her he would not let hospital staff perform an autopsy on her, and added that if they couldn't find the problem with her while she was alive, he wouldn't allow them to poke her anymore when she died.
According to authorities, Angela's symptoms were consistent with cyanide poisoning.
The affidavit concluded that James had shown intent and planning to end his wife's lives by looking for ways to kill an undiscovered person, giving her poisons that correspond with her hospitalized symptoms and trying to start a new life together with the other woman.
James was taken into custody shortly after Angela was placed on life support. James was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder. According to AP, he was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is being represented in court by the public defender's bureau and is due to appear in court Thursday. There he will find out if prosecutors will bring charges.
