Prince Harry was recently accompanied by his wife Meghan markle to New York City to attend Salute to Freedom Gala, where the Duke of Sussex presented medals to five U.S. military vets aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier. Harry did not wear his military uniform despite his service in the British Army for 10 years. He is not allowed to wear military dress despite his public service record.
Prince Harry is Back in The Big Apple
Prince Harry took part in the Salute to Freedom Gala, New York City. While walking the red carpet in a black suit, Prince Harry looked sharp with Meghan Markle's red dress. In honor of Remembrance Day in Harry's homeland, the Duke and Duchess wore red poppies on formal wear.
Harry wore the medals he earned in his 10 year career as a British Army soldier, but he did not wear his military uniform. This might have been expected, since he was there to award medals to five deserving veterans. The royal couple worked out a deal to allow Harry and Markle to leave their positions as working royals.
Harry: A Not so Great Deal
According to reports, Harry tried to negotiate to retain some honorary royal titles such as Honorary Air Commandant at RAF Honington, Suffolk, Commodore, Small Ships and Diving Royal Naval Command and Captain-General Royal Marines. However, he was unsuccessful.
Harry's inability publicly to wear his military uniform is not the first instance of awkwardness. To avoid creating the impression of a family division and awkwardness, the royal family decided that no one would wear their military uniform to Prince Philip's funeral in April.
Charles Rae, a former royal correspondent, has been defending the controversial decision on GB News. He said, "Now, I'm surprised that Harry is not going to wear the uniform in America because he doesn't represent the queen and to fair to the lad he served twice... he was a former soldier."
Rae mentioned the immense amount of work Harry had done for wounded soldiers through the Invictus Games, which Rae founded. He's done a lot of work with soldiers recovering from injuries sustained while serving. I see no reason why he shouldn't be wearing his uniform to this American event where he will hand out medals for American servicemen.
Harry was able at least to show some of his military achievements to the ceremony via his Medals. Although the Firm may have been able remove his honorary titles, they cannot take away his years of military service.
