Today's shocking news broke that Alec Baldwin accidentally shot a live round from a prop gun while filming Rust. This tragically killed the film's director Halyna HUTCHINS and left Joel Souza with serious injuries. This incident is shocking, but not unusual. Hollywood has seen many gun-related incidents. Here are some more.
Brandon Lee, "The Crow"
This is the most famous gun-related movie accident. In 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, a legendary martial artist, was a rising star. The Crow promised that would make his career a superstar, and it was a huge box office success. He was 28 when he was killed by an accidental bullet while finishing shooting. A bullet was lodged in the chamber by a prop gun because it was not properly made.
Lee was buried in Seattle's Lake View Cemetery, alongside his father. There mourners gather daily. Throughout the Hutchins shooting, everyone is thinking about Lee. Shannon Lee, his sister, shared her sympathy for Hutchins. She reminded everyone that gun violence should never happen on a movie set.
Charles Chandler, "The Captive"
Cecil B. DeMille worked on The Captive in 1915. Blanche Sweet was the star. Extras were seen firing shots on a door in one scene. They decided to use live ammunition for realism. The door had to be taken down for the next shot, so live rounds were replaced by blanks. Charles Chandler was also shot in the head. One rifle didn't have its ammunition changed. He died instantly. This was one of the first instances of gun violence on a movie-set.
Jon-Erik Hexum 'Cover Up’
If they are fired at close range, blanks can still cause serious damage. The CBS TVseries cover up featured star Jon-Erik Hexum who decided to play Russian Roulette with a prop gun. He fired the blank cartridge into his temple and rammed a fragment of bone into his skull. A week later, he died. Amazingly, though, Hexum died a week later. Antony Hamilton replaced him.
Bryce Dion, "Cops"
Local law enforcement opened fire on a Wendy's while filming a 2014 episode Cops. Bryce Dion, the audio technician, was accidentally shot. Both he and the suspect were transported to a local hospital, where they were declared dead upon arrival.
Every one of these deaths could have been prevented, but these accidents keep on happening.
