The New Housewives Share All Details on How Russell Armstrong Suicide and Abuse was Handled

Taylor Armstrong claimed that the cameras provided some protection from his alleged abuse. Adrienne, Kyle, and Lisa Vanderpump talked privately with producers before Camille bragged it out to everyone.

The second season of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," which aired just after Taylor Armstrong's suicide, featured a dark episode. It aired after Russell, Taylor Armstrong's husband, committed suicide. Taylor had filed for divorce after she claimed physical abuse.

The cast was aware of something amis while filming the pilot season. This is revealed in "Not All Diamonds and Rose": The Inside Story from The Real Housewives From The People Who Lived It by Dave Quinn and Andy Cohen Books. This oral history provides a detailed picture of each franchise, including first-hand accounts by Andy Cohen, producers, network executives and casting directors, as well as the voices of many housewives.

Taylor says that Taylor was scared to leave Russell after all the arguments with the girls. Taylor also said in the book that her ex believed he would be loved by America when she signed up to the show. Instead, viewers saw only problems in their marriage.

Alex Baskin, a producer, said that "as we progressed into filming we would receive calls where Taylor would describe arguments she had with her husband that weren't outright physical abuse but sounded really worrying." He said that production offered to place Kennedy and her daughter in a hotel room if she felt "fearful," but Taylor refused and said they were just fighting over "misunderstandings."

Taylor believed that the cameras provided some protection from abuse but was still anxious. She hoped that the show would provide her with a source of income and power, and she thought the shooting schedule might help her to keep him under control.

Chris Cullen, the producer of the show, stated that it became "an enormous crises of conscience" for all involved. It was an open secret between cast and crew as the situation deteriorated. Adrienne Maloof said that she, Lisa Vanderpump, and Kyle Richards, all of whom Taylor confided in, spoke to production about the situation. Production was hesitant to speak with Taylor, but they didn't want them to lose their trust and believed they should talk to Taylor about the things they had told her. They felt Taylor needed to share it with them on her own.

Taylor confided in Camille Grammer, after Russell had allegedly "knocked [Taylor]'s jack out of its socket", before Camille dropped the abuse bombshell during a tea party at Vanderpump. Both Taylor and Camille say that there was some confusion. Taylor thought Taylor wanted Taylor to discuss the abuse, while Armstrong wanted Taylor to talk to her about another issue with Lisa.

Taylor said that Taylor was shocked when Camille said, "We don't say it hits you, but we just said it," while Camille expressed deep regret. However, she felt that some cast members and producers wanted to be able discuss the matter on camera.

Taylor stated that she believed the marriage would end in one of three ways: anger management, divorce or "or he was going out to kill me."

Cullen stated that the Armstrongs served Camille quickly with legal papers. Camille threatened to sue production in the event of any abuse allegations being made. After receiving the legal papers, Taylor and Russell were disinvited from a planned cast trip in Hawaii. The other women then told Kyle about the information and went home to confront Taylor.

Taylor said, "I ended up at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. It was inevitable it would be coming out." Taylor also recalled that producers told her she had started to miss filming because of corrective surgery. Bravo was able to air all of their films without her admitting to having been abused. Taylor filed for divorce, and a month later, he committed his suicide.

Andy claims that there was a discussion about airing the show. This conversation took place before the premiere was re-edited to include reactions from the cast to the suicide. Taylor said that Taylor was not asked to discuss it. However, she was allowed to screen the episode prior to it airing.

Baskin stated that it was "one of the few times we were looking to cast approval because we wanted her to be okay with what aired." The program aired with Baskin's blessing.

Since 2014, Taylor has been happily married with John Bluher.
