The singer, whose real-life name is Abel Tesfaye, told GQ that there was nothing sexual about the graphic scene between his character Tedros and co-star Lily Rose Depp.
The Weekndis responding to a controversial sexual scene in the latest episode of HBO's "The Idol."
The episode 2 included a 10-minute graphic scene featuring Tedros (The Weeknd and Jocelyn), which had viewers cringing. The scene shows Jocelyn (an aspiring pop singer) sitting on a bed with her blindfolded while Tedros (a club owner, and possibly sex cultist), gives her explicit instructions about what to do.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, defended this disturbing scene and called the sex shown in the series "gluttonous."
Tesfaye stated that the 1992 film Basic Instinct was used as a "reference".
He continued: "However you feel watching that scene, you may feel uncomfortable, gross or embarrassed for the characters." It's all these emotions that add up to this: This guy is way over his head. This situation is one in which he shouldn't be here.
Tesfaye then shared his thoughts on Tedros' character, calling him a "douchebag", and "such an loser".
"You look at this guy, and you can see that he has a score. Jocelyn could be his biggest score ever. He told GQ that it was obvious. He's overindulging. He walks into the house and looks around as if he's in over his head. This could be the biggest task I've done. Whatever he is doing."
"Even the sexual, it's so obscene." "Especially in episode 2," he added. "Gluttony is the only way I can describe it." He doesn't know he is there. He seems like a total loser. "Those moments reveal the humanity of a psychopath. It's the crack in his armor."
Tesfaye stated that "there is nothing really mysterious or mesmerizing" about the character he plays, and noted that everything was done on purpose. "We deliberately made him look that way, with his clothes, his hair, and his appearance. The guy is a douchebag." You can tell that he is very concerned about his appearance and thinks it's good. You see him alone in these strange moments -- he practices, he is calculated. He needs to do this, otherwise he is pathetic. This is true for many people who feel like a fish in water when they are put in these situations.
