In 1981, Prince Charles proposed to Diana Spencer and the world was abuzz with his soon-to be bride. The beautiful Princess Diana was a fashion and social icon. She is elegant, charming, and can pull off any look.

The Chanel accessories and suits were a favorite of the late Princess of Wales. After her bitter divorce, the mother-of-two couldn't bear to wear anything by the French fashion house.

It was not known why Lady Di didn't wear Chanel after her divorce for years, until a recent interview.

Happily Ever After Turned Hellacious

The public was initially enthralled by the love story of Charles and Diana. It was a fairy tale about a noble prince who falls for a shy, unrestrained aristocrat.

Photos of Princess Diana were everywhere after their July 1981 televised wedding. The world was able to see every outfit she wore for every occasion. She was able to wear casual or formal outfits, cementing her status among style icons Jane Birkin and Jackie O.

While Princess Diana was still living behind closed doors, she endured a difficult marriage. Prince Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowes five years after his wedding. Prince Charles was a long-standing friend of Bowles, the Duchess and Duchess of Cornwall.

The Prince and Princess of Wales lived separate lives at this point. In 1992, they separated. In a 1995 interview with BBC1, Princess Diana was asked about Bowles's role during her divorce. She replied, sadly, "Well there were three of you in this marriage." It was quite crowded.

Prince Charles confessed to his affair to Camilla Parker Bowles, and Princess Diana stunned the globe in the "revenge gown". But, when it came time to her tailored Chanel suits, she couldn’t bear to take them out of her closet.

A reminder to not be forgotten

Jayson Brunsdon, an Australian designer, shed light on the reasons why Princess Diana could not wear Chanel anymore in a 2018 interview with Harper's Bazaar.

Brunsdon remembered helping Lady Di prepare for a photo shoot in the hospital. Brunsdon recalled helping Lady Di get ready for a hospital photo op.

Brunsdon stated that Brunsdon returned to her bedroom with a few bags and shoes, and then just dropped them all on the couch. "Then, she said, "What do you think?" So, I started going through them all and found a pair Chanel shoes.

"I said, "Well, these would be great with the Versace." And she replied, "No, I can’t wear linked Cs-the triple C." The princess explained that the interlinked C’s reminded her too much her ex-husband (aka Charles and Camilla).

Although Princess Diana eventually started to incorporate Chanel into her wardrobe, she opted for pieces that didn't have the linked C logo. Unfortunately, this was where her style evolution would remain.
