Viola Davis is a long-standing star among Hollywood's most successful. Davis wants to do more than just keep acting. She wants to be able to influence how Black women are seen on the screen.
Davis Fights to Make Movies With A Cultural Impact
Davis is currently promoting the historical action film The Woman King. Davis was also a producer and starred in the film. Davis stated that it was a fight. It's called The Fight. It's about finding partners with the same vision and who can give it a green signal.

She continued, "And then there's the other fight. If it's a predominantly Black male cast, it's because we haven’t led the global movie box office, there’s no precedent that this will work and make money back for those who invest in it." The bottom line is money. It's not about culture impact, it's about money.
Davis: "I Can Change the Way Black Women See...Within The Industry"
Davis is determined to win the fight but she admits that she cannot do it all. The actress said that she has a deep understanding of her limitations as a human being. "I can't carry the weight of my past on my shoulders. That is impossible. I am not God. "What I can do is what it is possible to do."
Davis said, "What can I do to make people realize that we are so much more than what people think of dark-skinned women." Davis continued, "That we're sexual, that our looks are attractive, that they can be smart, and that our identities are not determined solely by their gazes. That is something I can change. I can make a difference in the perception of Black women within the industry."
'The Woman King's Success has Given Davis 'Agency' in Hollywood
Davis has played many notable roles over the years including Doubt and The Help. But, Davis calls her role in The Woman King "a culmination of my 33-year career."
She shared that she arrived in Hollywood with hopes and dreams, but not having ownership or agency. " The Woman King seemed like the perfect gift and conduit to me that would allow me to have agency."
