The WGA has recently welcomed new writers who say that it is a "chaotic" time to join the industry, but they are optimistic the strike will benefit them "on the long term."
Since three months, the WGA has been on strike and still writers are on the picket line.
TooFab spoke to two staff writers at Culver Studios, Tika P. Peterson and David Gabriel about their experiences as writers and actors during the boycott of the studios.
Gabriel revealed, "We joined guild in February." "We are newbies."
He continued, "As a group, we are only paid as if it were one person." "Raising the minimums for us is really important so we can earn a living doing something we have been doing since a long time."
Peterson notes that "the streaming market is also changing everything."
In the last 100 years, we've seen how they cut costs everywhere they can. Peterson said, "I personally believe it leads to less-strengthened work."
It's absurd that we were able to use the residuals to live, but now we get very very little. And the companies will not share data on how many people watch.
Peterson said that they knew the strike would probably last a few months. "Even after we got the jobs, we thought, 'Oh we might not finish the room.' In a way, we were prepared.
Gabriel added, "I think we will benefit the most from everyone else because we are at the very beginning."
It's a chaotic period to be in the industry, but the results that come out of it will help us a lot on the long term."
Both are thrilled to see support from the public as well as those in the industry for the strike.
Gabriel said, "It's so cool to be out on the picket lines and feel this sense community, especially with SAG fighting."
As early-career writers, it is important to feel a sense of collective action.
The captains strike "ranges from showrunners and staff writers"
It's great to see this and I'm sure there are many A-Listers in the WGA. Peterson added, "It's very encouraging." "These people use their platforms to raise everyone up."
She concluded, "It is one of the best things about being here." "You meet people who are completely different than you, but you're kind of all in it together."
